Korean Shamanism
무당 Mudang
A Korean shaman is one who practices muism. A mudang is usually a woman. Mudangs are people who got possessed or called by spirits and they are called to practice rituals. They are said to have other worldly powers.
만신 Manshin
The word "manshin" literally means 10,00 spirits. It is another way to refer to a mudang. Some mudangs would rather be called a manshin.
Shin
The word shin means "god". However, it is more aligned to supernatural spirits. These spirits are objects of worship, or spirits that would possess Mudangs.
조상 Josang
This word means ancestry. Koreans usually have rituals appeasing their ancestors . From ceremonies to leaving food out for the deceased, it is a way of respecting the family lineage.
신병Shinbyeong
This word means spiritual sickness. It is a prolonged sickness that indicates spiritual abilities. This type of person is then taken in by an experienced Shaman and taught and trained.
세습무Saehshipmoo
These types of shamans have a family lineage of shamanism, especially from mother to daughter. Shamanism is taught in the family and kept up as a family tradition.
굿Gut
A gut is a ritual performed by Shamans. There are three main types of guts each with a different reason and a different tradition. Guts are passed down from shaman to shaman, however each shaman has different ways of ritualizing. Guts have several variations regionally.
도당굿Dodanggut
This gut is meant for wellbeing and prosperity for a village. It is performed once a year, and has a performance element of song and dance.
씻김굿Shittkimgut
This gut cleases the spirit of a deceased person so that they can move on to the afterlife peacefully. It is sometimes performed at funerals. Usually those in the ritual wear all white, and have paper objects that represent spirits
내림굿
Naerimgut
This gut is an initiation gut for new Mudangs. In one version this gut, the intiatee dances on a sharpened knife, and seemingly does not get hurt as a testiment of the mudang's power.
부정Bujeong
Amulets and talismans that korean shamans make for clients for protection from misfortune, healing, prosperity and goodfortune.
무구 Muju
Ritualistic Elements bells, drums, paper symbols, amulets, knives, swords, instraments, etc.
민화Minhwa
Korean traditional folk painting. It wis used in a variety of ways in shamanistic practice, from blessings to curses to weddings, it is used in severals ways in practice.
선낭당Sonangdang
A shrine usually from a village spirit. It is built and maintained by villagers and people pray to spirits at the shrine. They are relatively common in mountainous places.
사당Sadang
Sadangs are ancestral shrines where mudangs usually practice.
